The coating oligo(ethylene) glycol thiols are not only fully biocompatible but they also prevent non-specific adsorption of biomolecules onto the nanoparticles (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2003, 125, 7790). At the same time, experiments with fluorescently labeled Au-PEG NPs indicate that they are internalized into cells via non-specific endocytosis and localize mainly in the cytoplasm and perinuclear region (Mater. Res. Soc. Symp. Proc. 2005, 845; Int. J. Nanomed 2006, 1, 5-58). In doing so, they are essentially non-toxic up to 200 μg/mL concentrations (Small 2008, 1, 26). Great buy for cell biologists interested in adding nano to their experimental toolbox!
