SAMs of amide-terminated alkane thiols have been used as templates for hydrogen-bond mediated polymerization of conductive diacetylenes (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2003, 125, 10532-10533), and in fundamental studies of the effects of surface wettability on the adhesion of proteins (Langmuir 2004, 20, 7779-7788). Owing to the lateral hydrogen bonds between terminal amide groups, the SAMs made of this product have increased thermal stability (by as much as 50oC, J. Phys. Chem. B 2002, 106, 10401-10409).
